Searching for extraterrestrial life on icy moons and getting a better understanding of the emergence of life are the key motivations behind the TRIPLE Projects.

The acronym TRIPLE stands for Technologies for Rapid Ice Penetration and subglacial Lake Exploration and constists of multiple bespoke projects dedicated to the ambitious goals of the challenging demands of a deep sea and space mission.


Several national partners collaborate to develop an exploration system to carry out a mission where a miniaturized autonomous underwater vehicle (nanoAUV) autonomously explores an under ice water body to maximize scientific yield.

The nanoAUV shall be deployed in a demonstation scenario at Antarctica  2026 and also apply to future space missions on icy moons like Enceladus or Europa to search for signs of biosignatures.

The TRIPLE-GNC is a successor project of TRIPLE-nanoAUV1 and focuses on the development of the Guidance, Navigation & Control System of the nanoAUV.

As part of the TRIPLE-GNC Project we are contributing by developing software components for the nanoAUV, that enables the system to autonomously plan and execute its mission. As well as providing a Simulation Environment for as a virtual testbed.

The main objectives are to develop strategies for locating regions of interest, perform mission and motion planning to survey these areas, and ensuring safe return to the ice shuttle.
